Arsenal's Dowman Faces Uphill Battle Over Red Card Appeal

28 October 2026

Max Dowman’s red card in Arsenal's unexpected Carabao Cup exit against Fleetwood Town has stirred up quite a debate. The young talent was dismissed for violent conduct after kicking out at Harrison Neal during a tense moment late in the match, which Arsenal eventually lost on penalties. Arsenal is moving quickly to appeal the decision, with documents due by 1pm on Thursday. They’re hoping for a verdict before their crucial clash against Liverpool on Sunday, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher isn’t optimistic about the appeal. Speaking to Sky Sports News, he stated, "I don't see it succeeding due to the clear intent shown by Dowman. The aggression in his action is evident, and I believe the appeal will fall short." Gallagher further elaborated that Dowman’s actions were more severe than a comparable incident involving Cole Palmer. "Dowman’s movement resembles a kicking action, and he was fully aware of what he was doing," he explained. Interestingly, Gallagher also pointed out that Arsenal should have been awarded a free-kick for Neal's tackle on Dowman, which he deemed reckless. "Neal was overly aggressive, and although he made contact with the ball, he didn’t consider Dowman's safety," Gallagher added. Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, while acknowledging the red card's harshness, stressed that Dowman needs to brace himself for tough challenges ahead. "That tackle was an old-school challenge—he got the ball but followed through," Merson said. "Dowman’s reaction seemed exaggerated, and in my opinion, it didn’t warrant a red card." Merson highlighted Dowman's youth, reminding everyone that at just 16, he will face tougher situations throughout his career. "He’s going to encounter these scenarios repeatedly, and he needs to learn to manage them better," he noted. As Dowman walked off the pitch, Mikel Arteta was seen speaking to him, a moment that drew criticism from Merson. He believed the manager should have offered support rather than reprimand. "If it were an experienced player, Arteta wouldn’t have reacted that way. He should have comforted Dowman instead. They were still in the game at 1-1," he reflected. When pressed about his conversation with the teen, Arteta confirmed it was a pre-game discussion but declined to share specifics. He did suggest that Dowman needs to learn from the incident, stating they had prepared him for the challenges he would face. Jobi McAnuff, another pundit, expressed confusion at Arteta’s reaction, calling it a bit harsh. "Dowman is only 16, and while he is a remarkable talent, he will make mistakes. Arteta could have handled that situation more sensitively," he commented. As the dust settles on this incident, it’s clear that both Dowman and Arsenal have lessons to learn as they navigate the pressures of top-flight football.
