Arteta's Tough Love: A Lesson for Young Dowman After Red Card Drama
27 October 2026
Max Dowman found himself at the center of attention after being sent off during Arsenal's surprising Carabao Cup exit against Fleetwood Town. As the 16-year-old made his way down the tunnel, Mikel Arteta appeared to offer some words of wisdom, prompting mixed reactions, particularly from former player Paul Merson.
The incident unfolded just before Arsenal’s elimination in a penalty shootout. Dowman was dismissed for violent conduct after a clash with Fleetwood defender Harrison Neal that escalated into a scuffle. After receiving his marching orders, Dowman walked past Arteta, who leaned in to speak to him, a moment that drew scrutiny from critics.
When asked about his comments to the young player, Arteta responded, "It was something that we discussed before the game," but chose not to elaborate further. Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe suggested that the red card was a bit harsh, to which Arteta remarked, "I haven't seen it with the camera. The referee’s decision stands, and that’s that."
Despite being down a man, Arteta pointed out that his team still had three significant chances to score. Reflecting on Dowman's actions, he said, "We knew the context of the match and what to expect emotionally."
Merson criticized Arteta’s approach, asserting that he wouldn’t have reacted the same way to an experienced player. "If it was [Viktor] Gyokeres, who’s an experienced international, Arteta wouldn’t have treated him like that. Dowman is just a kid," he stated. Merson felt that a more supportive gesture would have been appropriate given the circumstances.
Fellow pundit Jobi McAnuff echoed Merson's sentiments, describing Arteta's reaction as puzzling. "He probably sees it as petulant and naive, which it is. Dowman is just 16, and while he’s a fantastic talent, mistakes are part of the journey. Arteta didn’t handle this situation well."
After the match, Arteta was gracious in congratulating Fleetwood for their unexpected victory, emphasizing that his players' effort was not the issue. He lamented the lack of finishing, noting that Arsenal registered 19 shots, with Kai Havertz missing multiple key opportunities.
"Congratulations to Fleetwood for advancing. It’s a disappointing day for us," Arteta said. "I can’t fault the players’ attitude; they did what was required. We had so many chances, and if we want to avoid the margins that lead to penalties, we must capitalize on those opportunities."
He added, "It wasn’t about effort or determination; we just didn’t create the larger margins needed to secure a win. Our performance should have reflected better in the scoreline."
