Barcelona Hit with Fine Over Alvarez Approach

27 October 2026

Julian Alvarez netted his first La Liga goal of the season last weekend, but the spotlight has shifted off the pitch with Barcelona facing a fine. Barcelona has been slapped with a fine of €602 (£503) after Atletico Madrid lodged a complaint regarding their contact with the Argentine striker, Julian Alvarez. Atletico accused their La Liga rivals of reaching out to Alvarez without giving them prior notice in writing. The 26-year-old forward remains with Atletico, tied to the club with a contract lasting until June 2030. The fine was imposed by the Spanish football association, and although Atletico escalated the matter to FIFA, the governing body stated it lacked jurisdiction over this case. Alvarez has encountered some hostility from his own fans this season, but he turned the tide with a game-winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, earning a standing ovation from parts of the crowd. Following the match, he took the opportunity to express his regret to the fans. Reflecting on a previous interview where he mentioned wanting to realize his dream of playing for Barcelona, Alvarez admitted, "It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry too, especially given how they've supported me since I arrived." Alvarez made the jump to Atletico Madrid from Manchester City on a six-year deal worth up to £81.5 million in August 2024. Since moving, he has scored 51 goals in 115 appearances for Atletico after a prolific stint at City, where he tallied 36 goals in 103 matches.
