Barcelona Slapped with Fine Over Álvarez Pursuit

27 October 2026

Barcelona's chase for Julián Álvarez has cost them a small fine, with the Spanish FA hitting them with a €602 (£503) penalty. This followed a complaint from Atlético Madrid, who accused their rivals of reaching out to the striker without proper notification. Atlético Madrid claimed that Barcelona approached the Argentine forward, whose contract runs until June 2030, without informing them in writing first. This sanction relates to Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Although Atlético also took their case to FIFA, the global governing body stated it had no authority to intervene. For Álvarez, the road to redemption has been quite visible. He scored the decisive goal in Atlético's recent match against Deportivo La Coruña, marking his second consecutive goal and helping his team inch closer to La Liga leaders Barcelona. However, the striker has faced backlash from fans after he expressed his desire to play for the Catalan giants during an interview at the 2026 World Cup. "It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry too. Especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived," he admitted, acknowledging the stir his comments caused in the summer transfer saga. Despite being booed by home supporters earlier in the season, Álvarez received a warm standing ovation from sections of the crowd following his recent goal. This gesture indicates a possible reconciliation with the Atlético faithful as he works to regain their trust.
