Carrick: United Can Reclaim Glory, but Patience is Key
6 November 2026
Michael Carrick is confident that Manchester United can once again reach the heights achieved during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, yet he knows the road ahead will require a lot of patience.
Today marks four decades since Ferguson took the reins at Old Trafford on November 6, 1986. This anniversary comes at a pivotal time for the club, as Carrick's role as manager continues to come under scrutiny.
After a dramatic 3-2 comeback against Roma in midweek, Carrick finally found some breathing room following a frustrating nine-match winless streak. However, this Sunday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa, which will be broadcast live on Sky, presents another significant challenge.
Ferguson’s anniversary serves as a reminder of the daunting task before United. When Ferguson arrived, the club hadn’t clinched a league title since 1967, and it took nearly seven years before he delivered that long-awaited championship. The rest is history, with United going on to secure 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
Carrick believes there’s no reason why the club can’t rise to the top again, but he stresses the need for consistent performances rather than relying on quick fixes.
"It's difficult to achieve success. It was tough back then, and it remains tough now," he noted.
"This illustrates just how challenging it is to maintain success over time, not just to have fleeting moments of it. We need to stay focused and take it game by game, allowing success to build naturally. If we can do that consistently, we’ll see greater rewards."
When asked if it’s realistic for United to be measured against Ferguson’s incredible standards, Carrick replied, "It's not impossible. Anything is possible. You have to build wisely and keep things in perspective. Our recent history shows what we’re aspiring to achieve, but it won’t happen overnight. We have to accept that real success requires time."
He continued, "We demonstrated significant improvement last season, which shows what we’re capable of. The real challenge is maintaining that level of performance. Consistency is the name of the game; there are no shortcuts."
Carrick acknowledged the evolution of football over the years. "The game is always changing, as it did during Sir Alex's tenure after Sir Matt [Busby]. We must adapt to the current landscape and focus on the present while learning from the past."
He expressed his awareness of the comparisons being made but emphasized the need to concentrate on current challenges. "We all want to win matches as quickly as possible, but we must also exercise patience."
Reflecting on his time under Ferguson as a player, Carrick shared how their relationship has deepened since he transitioned into management. "I probably have more contact with him now than when I was playing. Relationships evolve, and that’s natural.
The impact he had on my career was profound, not always through direct dialogue but through the standards he set and the habits I adopted from him. Now, we’ve developed a friendship, which is very rewarding. His influence on this club is still immense, and it continues to resonate today."
