Celtic Comeback: Duran and Osmand Ignite Victory Over Besiktas

6 November 2026

Celtic flipped the script on a tense evening at Parkhead, thanks to the dynamic duo of Callum Osmand and Camilo Duran. After an hour of play, the mood was grim as the team trailed 1-0 against Besiktas, inching closer to a disheartening fourth straight Europa League defeat. Manager Martin O'Neill looked to his bench for inspiration, bringing on Osmand and Duran to replace Sebastian Tounekti and James Forrest. The change sparked immediate energy. Within just 43 seconds of entering the fray, Osmand sent the ball into the bottom corner of Alexander Nubel’s net with his very first touch. Suddenly, Celtic had a new dimension in their attack, and Besiktas began to show signs of vulnerability. As the clock ticked to 77 minutes, O’Neill decided to make another pivotal change, taking off Kasper Hogh after yet another lackluster performance. Duran was pushed into a central role, and once again, the decision paid dividends. Osmand set Duran up with a clever pass that allowed the Colombian to round Nubel before slotting in Celtic's second goal, putting them ahead. Though Orkun Kokcu equalized for Besiktas with a stunning strike, Duran had the final word just two minutes later, deftly controlling a scuffed shot from Kieran Tierney and firing home to send the home fans into raptures. Duran's late brace not only clinched the victory but also marked the first Europa League win for Celtic this season. Former Celtic star Stiliyan Petrov praised the substitutions, stating, "Everything changed with the subs; Osmand coming on and Duran going through the middle. It was a really positive 30 minutes." Interestingly, it had been since 1977 that a Celtic substitute scored twice in a European match, a testament to the impact of Osmand and Duran. O’Neill spoke highly of their contributions, saying, "Osmand came on, first touch put the ball in the net, and Duran has been fabulous for us all season." When pressed about whether his substitutions were inspired or if he should have started his best players, O’Neill remained diplomatic. "We've played nine games in 25 days; some players needed a breather. It was by design to do exactly what it did." The difference in Celtic's attacking threat with Duran in the center compared to Hogh was night and day. Hogh, who came with an £11 million price tag, has struggled, failing to score in 16 of his 17 appearances. Against Besiktas, he didn’t manage a single shot and had only one touch in the opposition box during his 77 minutes on the pitch. In stark contrast, Duran scored two goals and had multiple impactful touches in the box in just half an hour. O’Neill has been uncertain about his best lineup, but Duran’s performances suggest he may be the key player up top. Hearts defender Craig Halkett commented on Hogh's situation, noting, "It'll be tough for Hogh. He was the big-money signing, but it's not coming off for him. As a player, you need to keep your head down and hope it turns around." Osmand has also positioned himself as a strong candidate to start, showcasing his direct style and knack for scoring in critical moments. "This is a great team we're playing against," Osmand said. "Camilo did amazing; he's such a poacher. I just want to come on and make something happen. So happy with tonight."
