Celtic's Captain and Manager Aligned on Team's Challenges
30 October 2026
Celtic's captain Callum McGregor recently described his team's style of play as resembling a game of basketball, a sentiment that didn't go unnoticed by manager Martin O'Neill.
Following a frustrating 2-2 draw with Dundee United, McGregor pointed out that the team has struggled to maintain their usual control on the pitch. He raised a valid concern that playing strikers like Callum Osmand and Camilo Duran out of position as wingers might be exacerbating these issues, especially with just three wins in their last nine outings.
When asked about McGregor's observations ahead of the upcoming clash with Falkirk, O'Neill initially claimed he hadn’t heard the captain's remarks. However, once he understood the context, he quickly echoed McGregor’s concerns, particularly regarding Osmand's role.
"I completely agree that Callum Osmand is fundamentally a center forward," O'Neill stated, emphasizing that the player might need a strong partner to thrive rather than leading the line alone. He also acknowledged Duran's capabilities as a center forward, suggesting that the squad is still learning to gel together.
Despite the turbulence, Celtic remains four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. A victory against Falkirk could extend that lead to seven points, while Rangers focus on their League Cup commitments.
Celtic has experienced only one league defeat, which came at home to Rangers, but they have faced three consecutive losses in the Europa League, leading to some unrest among fans, particularly the Green Brigade who have staged a boycott.
Other players have echoed McGregor's thoughts on the team’s inconsistency. Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers noted after the recent derby defeat that their play has been "too random". However, O'Neill remains optimistic about the team's potential for improvement as they continue to find their rhythm in the winter months.
"I walk into this press conference feeling buoyed most weeks," the Northern Irish manager stated confidently. "We’re doing fine despite the challenges. Many players didn’t join us until late and missed pre-season, so we need to be patient as we build cohesion. Right now, I believe we're holding our ground."
