Celtic's Struggles Under O'Neill: A Team in Decline?

1 November 2026

Celtic's hopes of extending their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership took a hit with a surprising 2-0 loss to Falkirk. This defeat marked Falkirk's first victory over the Hoops since 2007, and it highlights a concerning trend for Martin O'Neill's squad, who have now won only three of their last ten matches across all competitions. Chris Sutton, a former Celtic striker, didn't shy away from expressing his frustration after the match. He described the current Celtic side as a "team in regression," emphasizing the unpredictability of O'Neill's lineups. Falkirk's Ethan Ross struck early, followed by a stunning finish from Scott Tanser, exposing Celtic's ongoing defensive issues. This latest setback leaves the Hoops with just three wins in their past ten outings, and they couldn't capitalize on their four-point lead at the top of the table, all while facing a challenging Europa League match against Besiktas next. Sutton was clear in his assessment, stating, "The club and the team are in regression. They're just not functioning well right now." He noted that while O'Neill might point to their league position, their European performance has been dismal, particularly against lesser-known teams from Azerbaijan and Armenia. "Celtic fans have every right to expect more," Sutton added. The problems at the club have been evident throughout the season, and he believed it was no surprise they were outplayed by Falkirk. He criticized O'Neill's uncertainty regarding his best starting XI, suggesting that the entire setup is lacking coherence. Sutton further remarked on the coaching debate surrounding Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, asserting that the ultimate responsibility lies with O'Neill, who selects the coaching staff and sets the team's training regimen. "It's hard to see how Celtic are actually set up; it seems a bit haphazard," he said, referring to their reliance on individual brilliance rather than a cohesive game plan. This defeat was Celtic's second in the Premiership this season, following a frustrating 2-2 draw with Dundee United. But O'Neill remained defiant, insisting there was no reason to panic. "We're still top of the league," he told Sky Sports post-match. He pointed out that they had previously come from behind to claim the title and that they are still in a solid position. Having taken charge permanently after a successful season that included a league and cup double, O'Neill is aware of the challenges ahead. But as Sky Sports' Kris Boyd pointed out, the current form raises questions about his future at Parkhead. Boyd noted that Celtic has the potential to be a formidable force when all players are in sync, as demonstrated in matches against teams like Hearts. However, he echoed Sutton's concerns, stating, "They're not functioning properly. Serious questions need to be asked about Martin O'Neill now." With six losses in their last ten games, Celtic's trajectory seems troubling. Boyd suggested that a top football club should always have an eye on potential managerial changes, and questioned whether Celtic has a clear plan moving forward. "The hierarchy may claim success, but if there’s no strategy in place, it will inevitably catch up with you," he concluded.
