Chelsea Women: Unstoppable Blues on the Rise
28 October 2026
Chelsea Women are off to a flying start this season, winning two and drawing one of their opening three matches in the Champions League.
Their recent 2-0 win against Roma highlighted their versatility and ability to secure victory in various ways. After a disappointing last season, where they lost both the Women's Super League and FA Cup titles and faced an early European exit, the team is eager to bounce back.
Under the guidance of Sonia Bompastor, who took over after a historic treble-winning season, the Blues have shown signs of recovery. Although last season revealed some weaknesses in their transition, optimism is high as they look to reclaim their former glory.
Chelsea currently sits at the top of the Women's Super League alongside Manchester City, and their Champions League performance has been equally impressive. Bompastor expressed her satisfaction, stating, "I'm really pleased with the results for sure, but not only the results, I think the different performances."
In their match against Roma, Chelsea dominated the first half but struggled to convert chances until Ellie Carpenter scored the opener just after halftime. Kadeisha Buchanan wrapped up the win with a header late in the game, ensuring a deserved victory.
Bompastor emphasized the importance of their solid defensive play, noting that they have yet to concede a goal in their Champions League matches. "When you want to go far in competitions, it's good to have this solid base. With the quality we have in the team, I'm confident we will always create opportunities," she said.
The Champions League presents a different challenge, and Bompastor has adeptly rotated her squad to manage both league and European commitments. Chelsea appear to have tightened their defense, which had been a concern last season, while also becoming more efficient in attack.
Carpenter has been a standout performer with four goals, and England international Lauren James is in sensational form. Meanwhile, young talent Lexi Potter is building a promising partnership with Lionesses stalwart Keira Walsh.
The team’s adaptability shines through, able to shift between formations and play directly with the help of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton's precise distribution. Bompastor reflected on their growth, saying, "Even when we opened the competition against Austria Vienna, it was a tough game. We found a way to win, but we want to control every game."
Despite Manchester City's strong title defense last season, expectations were high for Chelsea to return to form. Bompastor remains cautious, reminding everyone that transitioning from a long-term coach like Emma Hayes takes time and adjustment.
"You need to consider the fact that Chelsea had the same coach for 12 years. It takes a while for players to adjust to a new coach and philosophy," she explained. The departure of key players like Sam Kerr and Millie Bright also added to the transition.
Captain Erin Cuthbert, however, is not surprised by the team's early success. "We had a good time to build in pre-season and a good trip away. The quality was always there, we just weren't clicking," she noted, adding that the team has now reached another level.
With a focus on both tactical improvements and fostering a positive club culture, the squad is feeling good about their prospects. Bompastor highlighted the significance of mentality and values in their success, stating, "When you’re able to get good results, it’s not only about the tactical aspects. It also has to be about mentality, culture, and values."
As they continue this unbeaten run, the Blues are eager to maintain their momentum and push forward in both the league and Europe.
