Controversy Strikes Under-15 World Cup: England Walks Off Amid Racism Claims
26 October 2026
In a dramatic turn of events at the Under-15 World Cup, England's young players left the pitch following allegations of racism directed at them by a player from the Republic of Ireland. The match, held in Azerbaijan, was called off just before the final whistle with the score at 4-1 in favor of Ireland.
Tensions flared late in the game after an altercation between players. An England player reported the incident to the coaching staff, leading to immediate discussions with the referee regarding the alleged racist remark. The England team subsequently made the decision to walk off the field.
FIFA has confirmed they are looking into the matter, stating, "We are aware of the incident and the match was abandoned due to England's refusal to continue playing." They assured that the situation will be examined by an independent disciplinary committee.
This incident unfolded in the closing minute of the Group C match in Baku. England’s head coach, Matt Thorpe, was seen urging the referee to address the situation, clearly distressed as he called his players off the field. The situation escalated when the referee claimed he could not hear the complaint being made.
One of Thorpe's assistants made it clear that they were reporting racism and insisted that their players did not wish to continue. "A player is upset," he commented, highlighting the emotional impact of the situation on the young athletes.
A heated exchange ensued between the coaching staffs as both sides expressed their commitment to protecting their players amidst the chaos. This marked the inaugural edition of the U15 World Cup and Festival, which features teams from an impressive 189 countries.
The tournament format consists of eight-a-side matches on smaller pitches with two 20-minute halves. England is set to face Zimbabwe next, while the Republic of Ireland will take on Cambodia, both scheduled for 20:45 local time (16:45 GMT) on Monday.
