Emotional Aftermath: Jesús Owono Struggles After De Miguel’s Tragic Passing

4 November 2026

FC Andorra's Lautaro Spatz has come to the defense of his teammate Jesús Owono following a heartbreaking incident that resulted in the death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel. The collision occurred on Monday, and the shockwaves are still being felt throughout the football world. Owono faced a wave of online abuse after the tragedy, leading him to deactivate his Instagram account. Some comments branded him a “murderer,” which prompted Andorra to extend psychological support to all club members coping with the loss. In a heartfelt social media post, Spatz expressed his solidarity with Owono, stating, “He is deeply affected by what has happened. Those who know him understand the kind of person he is and how much he is suffering.” He added that Owono would never intentionally harm anyone and acknowledged that tragic events can occur in football, though no one could foresee such dire outcomes. The incident led to Owono receiving a red card after a forceful challenge on the 30-year-old De Miguel, who later suffered a cardiac arrest. The Equatoguinean Football Federation has offered its support to Owono, emphasizing the profound sorrow he is experiencing. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Michel Owono from Can Vidalet has also faced backlash, receiving racist comments from individuals who mistakenly identified him as the Andorra player. In light of De Miguel's untimely death, Spanish national police have initiated a routine investigation, but local prosecutor José Luis Sénchez-Jáuregui suggested that criminal charges are unlikely to follow. Barcelona’s Raphinha shared how difficult it was to concentrate during the Champions League match against Aston Villa following the tragedy. Domestic fixtures were postponed, but international matches continued, including a moment of silence before Barcelona's 3-0 victory, where Raphinha scored twice. Reflecting on the day, Raphinha stated, “I want to send a lot of strength to the family of Jesús. It was quite difficult to play. After hearing the news, I didn’t have good feelings. It could have happened to anyone, and the fact that he was my age made it hit harder.” The football community continues to rally around those affected by this tragedy.
