Gold Cup Gets a Makeover: Concacaf Introduces New Format for 2027

5 November 2026

Concacaf is revamping the Gold Cup format, and it’s about time! The regional championship is set to return for its 19th edition in 2027, and these changes are all about making the tournament more competitive and exciting. The Gold Cup, which has been a staple in North, Central America, and the Caribbean since the 1960s, is evolving. Traditionally, the tournament featured four groups of four teams, but now it will operate with two groups of eight. This shift mirrors elements of the UEFA Champions League, and Concacaf believes it will bring more thrilling matchups earlier in the competition. Teams earn their spots in the Gold Cup through the Concacaf Nations League, a complex setup that awards eight slots from group-stage play and seven more through a secondary tournament for lower-ranked teams. A guest nation, like Saudi Arabia, will also join, adding an international flavor to the mix. Historically, the tournament has seen Mexico lift the trophy ten times, the U.S. seven times, and Canada once in 2000. However, the previous format often fell flat when it came to high-stakes early matches. Fans were sometimes left watching predictable games that lacked excitement, especially when top teams faced off against less competitive opponents. Concacaf’s new format aims to change that narrative. Instead of just three group-stage matches, each of the 16 teams will now face four opponents, ensuring a more balanced and engaging experience. The president of Concacaf, Victor Montagliani, emphasized that fans want to see top teams competing against each other right from the outset, and this new format delivers just that. While the changes aren’t revolutionary, they represent a significant step towards rekindling interest in the Gold Cup. The tournament kicks off on June 17, 2027, culminating in the final on July 11. Although host cities haven’t been announced yet, the U.S. has traditionally been the venue for this competition since its inception. As Concacaf looks to enhance the Gold Cup's appeal, it’s clear that every adjustment counts. Though it may not rival the Champions League's popularity, this fresh format could reignite fan enthusiasm and bring the excitement back to the Gold Cup.
