Harry Kane's Fairytale Rise: From EFL Loans to Ballon d'Or Glory
5 November 2026
Harry Kane has made football history, winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or and becoming the first Englishman to do so in 25 years. His triumph has been described as a 'Cinderella story' by former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood, who played a pivotal role in Kane's early career.
Sherwood, who handed Kane his Premier League debut, reflected on the striker’s incredible journey. "This is a Cinderella story we've never seen before," he told Sky Sports. "He keeps breaking records, and I keep thinking: 'Are we talking about the same kid?"
At 33, Kane has become just the fifth English player ever to win the award, following in the footsteps of Michael Owen, who won it at just 22 in 2001. While Owen had a smoother path to stardom, Kane's rise has been defined by perseverance and hard work.
From starting out on loan at Leyton Orient in League One to dominating the Bundesliga, Kane has certainly taken the long route to the top. "We have to highlight his journey," says Sherwood, who was mentioned by Kane during his acceptance speech.
Kane himself acknowledged the struggles he faced along the way. "My journey wasn't straightforward; I had to experience a lot of loan moves and fight my way to get to where I am now," he said.
Sherwood believes those early loan spells at clubs like Millwall and Norwich were crucial to Kane's development. "I hear a lot of people talking about failed loans, but we never felt like that. Those loans were the reason why we've got a player like that," he pointed out.
Kane's breakthrough at Spurs came when Sherwood took over as manager, giving the young striker his first Premier League start. He seized the opportunity, scoring in a 5-1 rout against Sunderland. "It was a sliding doors moment for him," Sherwood recalls.
Now, Kane stands as one of the most prolific scorers in football history, with nearly 550 goals for club and country. Last season, he reached new heights, netting an astonishing 73 goals across all competitions.
His move to Bayern Munich in 2023 has been a game-changer, allowing him to showcase his talents on a grand scale. Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher noted that this transfer was crucial for Kane’s recognition and success. "It’s a move he needed to make," Carragher said, emphasizing that Kane was hungry for more than just personal accolades.
Kane's decision to join Bayern has brought him the silverware he craved. Despite his impressive individual achievements at Tottenham, he was determined to win team trophies. "He wanted to go to a team that could win, and he picked Bayern," Sherwood remarked.
The striker's commitment to the team is evident. Sherwood believes that Kane values team success over individual awards, saying, "If I told you he would rather win the Champions League and the Bundesliga title than the Ballon d'Or for himself, that would be the truth."
Kane continues to shatter records in Germany, including becoming the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals. His journey from EFL loans to Ballon d'Or glory is a testament to his hard work and determination.
