Johnstone Burgh Faces Unique Cup Challenge with Back-to-Back Fixtures
28 October 2026
Johnstone Burgh, the Scottish fifth-tier club, is in a bit of a pickle. They’re gearing up to play two cup matches on Saturday, November 21, with the first one against Tayport in the Scottish Communities Cup kicking off at 14:30 GMT, and another against Dunipace starting just half an hour later at 15:00.
Finding a solution has proven to be quite the challenge. The club has reached out to opponents and other teams in hopes of shifting match times, but no one has been willing to budge from their Saturday schedules. Burgh expressed their frustration in a statement on X, saying they’ve explored every possible avenue for a resolution.
The club's statement outlined their attempts to rearrange league fixtures and South Challenge Cup ties, even suggesting midweek travel to Tayport or moving the match to a Friday night or Sunday afternoon. They even offered to forfeit their share of the gate receipts to sweeten the deal, but sadly, none of these efforts led to a workable solution.
Currently sitting eighth in the new Lowland League West after earning promotion from the West of Scotland League Premier Division, Burgh would have been strong contenders in both ties if they could field their best squad. They have previous success in the Scottish Communities Cup, having lifted the trophy two seasons ago.
On the other hand, Dunipace is struggling near the bottom of the new Lowland League East, while Tayport holds a mid-table position in the Midlands Premier League. All three clubs have faced fixture disruptions due to their advancement in the Scottish Cup, which has complicated scheduling.
While Tayport suffered a defeat to Stranraer and Dunipace faced a heavy loss to Largs Thistle, Burgh’s own match against Highland League side Formartine United was postponed, adding more weight to their situation.
Burgh’s management expressed their disappointment, reiterating their commitment to finding a way to compete in both games with their strongest lineup. They extended gratitude to Tayport and the other clubs for their consideration and emphasized that they’ve left no stone unturned in seeking a solution for their supporters.
