Konsa Shines Bright: Arsenal Defender Steps Up in Saliba's Absence

27 October 2026

Ezri Konsa marked a memorable moment in Arsenal's victory over Everton by netting his first goal for the club. With the news in July that William Saliba would be sidelined for an extended period due to a back injury, Gunners fans understandably felt a wave of concern. Saliba had formed a rock-solid defensive duo with Gabriel Magalhaes, helping Arsenal clinch the Premier League title while conceding just 27 league goals last season. Fast forward to the current campaign, and Saliba remains absent. However, Arsenal is still at the top of the Premier League, boasting the fewest goals conceded, largely thanks to Konsa's impressive performances. Questions arose when Arsenal secured Konsa from Aston Villa for £55 million in August. Was it too much for a player who wasn't an immediate necessity? But now, the conversation has shifted towards whether Konsa and Gabriel represent the best defensive pairing in football today. Even with seven senior defenders on their roster at the time, the decision to invest heavily in Konsa raised eyebrows. Yet, Arsenal's new strategy focuses on acquiring players in their prime to maximize their chances for silverware. Konsa fits the bill perfectly. After making 286 appearances for Villa since his arrival from Brentford in 2019, he played a crucial role in their Europa League triumph, marking the club's first European title in over four decades. His credentials are further bolstered by his status as a regular starter for the England national team, having featured prominently in the World Cup. His former teammate, Morgan Rogers, who recently made headlines with a £117 million move to Chelsea, has praised Konsa as one of the top centre-backs in the game. With his towering presence, speed, and tenacity, Konsa has quickly won over the fans at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has lauded his seamless integration into the squad, calling it "unbelievable." "To step into a huge club like Arsenal without a pre-season and perform at such a high level is no easy feat," Arteta stated. "The chemistry he's developed with Gabi is already looking solid, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have him." The stats back up Arteta’s admiration. Konsa boasted the best pass-completion rate in the Premier League last season and continues to lead the charts this season with an impressive 96% success rate on 324 passes. Arsenal's defense has been formidable, with five clean sheets in their first eight matches, the best record in the league. Since joining just before their season opener against Coventry, Konsa has started six of those games, making an impact right from his debut against his former club Villa. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown highlighted Konsa's ability to shine alongside elite players, noting that he hasn’t been overshadowed despite the high-profile names around him. Konsa's confidence surged further when he scored against Everton, emphasizing Arsenal's drive to maintain their winning momentum. "We are champions, and to stay on top, we need to keep winning at home," he remarked. The partnership between Konsa and Gabriel is thriving, with both defenders scoring in the match against Everton—something that hadn’t happened for Arsenal since February 2024. Konsa has also been a consistent presence in Arsenal's Champions League campaign, contributing to their unbeaten run. He noted that playing alongside Gabriel has been a joy, as the Brazilian has made his transition to the team much easier. While Saliba continues his recovery with individual training, Arteta remains keen to emphasize how valuable the Frenchman is to the squad. "We miss William, and we’re eager to have him back because of what he brings to our defense," he remarked. As the season unfolds, the real test will come when Saliba returns. However, Konsa's versatility to also play as a right-back means his place in the starting XI is secure, regardless of the competition.
