MacAnthony's Bold Pledge: Peterborough Sale on the Line
28 October 2026
Darragh MacAnthony has been a fixture at Peterborough United since 2006, and he’s making headlines again with a bold promise. The chairman and majority owner declared that if his team doesn't crack the top 10 in League One by February, he will sell his 75% stake in the club.
Following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Bradford City in the Carabao Cup, MacAnthony took to X to address fans directly. "I take full responsibility for all the squads built over my 20 years owning Posh," he wrote.
Despite the recent setback, he expressed his confidence in the current setup. "For some reason, I have a lot of confidence in the current one. RS [Robbie Savage] will bring the best out of them, and we as owners will support him in doing so," he added.
MacAnthony, who recently celebrated two decades at the helm, appointed Savage as the new manager earlier this month after parting ways with Luke Williams. Savage started strong, winning his first two matches, including a notable 3-1 victory over Leicester City. However, the momentum has since stalled, with the team failing to secure a win in their last four games.
Currently, Peterborough finds itself in a precarious position, sitting 21st in the League One standings and just a point adrift of safety after 12 games. Their next challenge comes against Luton Town this Saturday.
In 2018, MacAnthony sold half of his stake to Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson through their Canadian firm, Kelgary Sports and Entertainment. However, he regained full control of the club five years later when they left the board.
