Newcastle's Woes Deepen as Everton Hand Jaissle Another Defeat

2 November 2026

Jack Grealish might find it tough to reclaim his spot in the Everton starting eleven upon his return, as David Moyes's team is hitting their stride without him. Newcastle is reeling after a second defeat in just five days, this time at the hands of a youthful Everton side. Thierno Barry's goal secured the win for the visitors, who capitalized on Newcastle being reduced to ten men at St James’ Park. Questions surrounding Matthias Jaissle’s revamped squad are piling up after a tumultuous summer. Fans made their discontent clear following the match, leaving Jaissle with plenty to ponder. Supporters had already expressed their frustrations during the 3-1 Carabao Cup loss to Everton last Thursday, and Jaissle faced the music as he stepped onto the pitch to acknowledge the traveling fans. However, by that time, most of the 7,732 away supporters had already made their way out of the stadium. Replacing Eddie Howe was always going to be a tall order, especially after his successful tenure. The departures of key players like Bruno Guimarães, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Kieran Trippier, coupled with Jaissle's late arrival, have only made his job more challenging. He'll certainly be looking for reinforcements when the January transfer window opens. On the other hand, Moyes has his own headaches. Grealish's disciplinary issues have sidelined him, leaving him out of the cup clash after skipping a training session without permission. However, Moyes welcomed back defender Jarrad Branthwaite after he recovered from a concussion. Harvey Barnes was one of Newcastle's brightest sparks, frequently cutting in from the left. Yet, despite his efforts, he couldn’t convert his chances into goals. Joelinton also had a shot blocked by James Tarkowski, but the first half was largely marked by a lack of clear-cut chances from both sides. As frustration grew among the fans at St James’ Park, the atmosphere was palpably subdued. Barnes tried to make something happen with another attempt, but the home side struggled to fire on all cylinders. Both Jake O’Brien and Harrison Armstrong missed golden opportunities for Everton just before the break. Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Lukas Hornicek, finally faced a challenge early in the second half, and it ended in disaster. A mishap allowed Barry to score after Hornicek let Tyrique George’s shot slip through his grasp, leaving Barry with a simple finish into an empty net. Jaissle will certainly be displeased with his team's defensive lapses, particularly how easily Everton carved them open. As the visitors pressed for a second goal, Jaissle responded by substituting Joe Willock and Nico González. Young talent Sean Steur, who started brightly at St James’ Park, found himself on the bench recently, which puzzled some fans. Shortly after his introduction, Barnes set up Anthony Elanga, whose shot rolled along the goal line but, fortunately for Newcastle, did not cross fully for a goal. The crowd began to rally as the game progressed, but Newcastle’s attacking play still lacked the necessary sharpness to find the net. With just 15 minutes left, Jaissle brought on Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey, but Newcastle found themselves under pressure from a revitalized Everton side. The away fans were audible as Newcastle struggled to create clear opportunities. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Ramsey received a second yellow card in stoppage time. Now, some fans are left wondering how far above the relegation zone Newcastle can stay, as Jaissle faces a challenging road ahead this winter.
