Nicolas Jackson Shines at Aston Villa: A Perfect Reunion with Unai Emery
30 October 2026
Nicolas Jackson's journey has taken an exciting turn as he finds a new home at Aston Villa. After his departure from Chelsea, this move has proven to be beneficial for both parties, and the early results have surpassed all expectations.
His standout double against Manchester City marked a pivotal moment, especially considering it was under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, the manager who let him go from Chelsea in 2025. Jackson is not just rediscovering his form; he’s elevating his game to new heights in this second chapter with Unai Emery.
The bond between Jackson and Emery goes back to their days at Villarreal, a relationship that has now been rekindled. It’s a partnership that always seemed destined to flourish again.
“Unai taught me everything about football,” Jackson shared with Sky Sports last year. With Emery at the helm once more, it feels like Jackson is back in the classroom, learning and adapting.
As Jackson prepares to face Fulham on Saturday Night Football, Sky Sports explores his impressive start in his new claret and blue colors.
During his time at Chelsea, Jackson struggled significantly with his scoring, converting only 18 out of 61 big chances in two seasons. At Villa, however, he’s already turned three of five chances into goals, representing a notable leap in his conversion rate.
Jackson has netted four Premier League goals from an expected goals (xG) tally of just 1.98. To put that in perspective, only Erling Haaland is outperforming him in the league, with nine goals from an xG of 6.
Despite taking a similar number of shots, approximately three per game, Jackson has seen his conversion rate soar from 13.2 percent at Chelsea to 21 percent this season. The last time he exceeded that rate was during the 2022/23 season, his final year under Emery.
This upturn in form can be attributed to several factors. With Ollie Watkins moving on, Jackson has stepped into the role of the main striker, flanked by talents like Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo. This setup has allowed him to flourish, receiving the support he needs to express himself.
Jackson's first goal for Villa came during a 3-2 victory over Club Brugge, breaking the team's scoring drought. Since then, he and the squad have been on an upward trajectory.
The players surrounding him have also made a difference. With talents like Johan Manzambi, Emi Buendia, and McGinn, Jackson has plenty of options for passing and support, allowing him the freedom to create from various positions.
Reflecting on his development, Jackson noted, “When I was from Senegal, I knew how to play but I did not understand how to run on the pitch. Unai changed all that and made me into a different kind of player.”
Now, under Emery’s watchful eye, Jackson leads the league’s centre-forwards in dribbles completed and runs ahead of the ball per game.
It’s clear that Jackson’s motivation, paired with Emery’s demands, will determine if he can maintain or even improve his current form. “We worked during the one year on his skill, he improved his understanding better,” Emery commented upon Jackson's signing. “Now he could exploit his potential.”
Jackson's own words reflect his commitment: “I will bring my spirit. Fighting for the badge, fighting for the coach, as I always do.”
Emery has high expectations, but Jackson has a history of rising to the challenge.
Before the latest fixtures, one could argue that Jackson’s impact was more significant than Chelsea’s struggles, especially after their disappointing loss to Tottenham. While Chelsea lacked a recognized striker for much of the match, Jackson was already two goals deep against Manchester City.
His time at Chelsea saw him score double figures in both top-flight campaigns, but a crowded striker lineup with Joao Pedro and Liam Delap limited his opportunities. A loan to Bayern Munich was similarly constrained by the presence of Harry Kane, leaving Jackson with little room to thrive.
As a result, a fresh start became essential. Although Atletico Madrid expressed interest, financial hurdles blocked that move. Ultimately, Jackson's reunion with Emery at Villa came at a significant cost, potentially reaching a club-record fee of £65 million.
Aston Villa took a chance on a player brimming with potential, one who now has the chance to shine brightly in the Premier League as he fills the void left by Watkins.
