Rising Tensions: Sheffield United and Wrexham Renew Rivalry
30 October 2026
The encounter between Sheffield United and Wrexham marks a significant moment, as it’s the first time they’ve faced each other in the league since the 1982-83 season.
With both teams just two points apart, they are set to battle it out at Bramall Lane on Friday night at 20:00 GMT.
This match brings together Chris Wilder and Phil Parkinson, who share a history as former youth team-mates at Southampton. Though their rivalry is relatively new, it’s already packed with compelling narratives that promise an exciting showdown.
"It’s a tasty game," Wilder said. "While it’s not steeped in history, it has certainly gained momentum recently."
The last time these teams met was in the FA Cup fourth round replay in 2023, where Sheffield United squeezed past Wrexham, who were then in the National League. That encounter came just before Wrexham embarked on a remarkable journey of three consecutive promotions under Parkinson.
Their previous league meetings last season saw Wrexham pull off two impressive victories. They came from behind to triumph 5-3 at the Racecourse Ground and secured a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane in March.
"I watched both games again this week," Parkinson shared. "The 5-3 match was possibly one of the best in the Championship last season. It was a brilliant display of football."
Wilder, however, is not focusing too much on those past results.
"We’re not dwelling on what happened last year," he remarked. "We recognize they have quality players and a solid management team, and they’ve bolstered their squad this summer."
Two players will likely be in the spotlight during this match. Kieffer Moore, a former Sheffield United striker, scored twice against his old team last season and has continued his impressive form, netting five goals this term for Wrexham.
"Kieffer has had a solid start to the season," Parkinson noted. "He’s a handful when he’s on form, making him difficult to defend against."
Moore's departure from Sheffield United occurred under the management of Ruben Selles, but Wilder has previously stated he wouldn’t have let Moore leave had he been in charge at the time.
"He’s always been a threat to defenses throughout his career," Wilder said. "Last season was outstanding for him, and he should be proud of his achievements."
Callum O'Hare, who joined Wrexham this summer, is set to face his former team for the first time. Wilder previously criticized Wrexham’s aggressive approach in pursuing O'Hare, who scored against them last season.
"Losing your best players is never easy, but I’m not looking back on that issue," Wilder said firmly. "We had to adapt and move forward."
The touchline will be another area to watch, as Wilder and Parkinson share a competitive bond stemming from their days as young apprentices.
"We’ve had our fair share of battles," Parkinson recalled. "Chris is a good guy, but it’s always intense when we meet on the pitch."
As the teams prepare for their clash, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an electrifying match at Bramall Lane, with both sides eager to kickstart their campaigns with a much-needed win.
