Tenerife Community Unites in Mourning for Jesus de Miguel
4 November 2026
The island of Tenerife is enveloped in sorrow following the tragic passing of footballer Jesus de Miguel this past Tuesday. The 30-year-old striker succumbed to injuries after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a match on Monday, leaving fans in shock.
De Miguel quickly became a cherished figure at Tenerife, netting 11 goals during his first season as the club made its ascent to Spain's second division. Now, the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium has transformed into a tribute site, where hundreds have gathered in recent days to lay flowers, light candles, and pay their respects.
A poignant scene unfolds outside gate nine, adorned with bouquets, scarves, prayer cards, and heartfelt notes from fans and clubs across Spain. The atmosphere is heavy with emotion, as supporters stand in silence, grappling with the magnitude of this loss at the very spot where it occurred.
Goalkeeper Owono is among those mourning, calling this one of the “most difficult days” of his life. Visitors Lisa and Lee from Stoke-on-Trent, who were in Tenerife for a holiday, were taken aback by the events of the match. “We never expected something like this to happen,” they shared. “Seeing players crying and praying on the pitch was incredibly emotional.”
They returned the next day to pay tribute, leaving a Port Vale shirt among the offerings. “Football has no colors,” Lisa remarked. “If it was one of our players, we’d be heartbroken. They’re part of your family.”
For Carlos, a member of Tenerife’s disability side, the grief is deeply personal. “Honestly, there are no words to describe him. He was incredible,” he said, laying a flag in respect. He emphasized De Miguel’s significant contribution to the club’s recent success, recalling the difficult times they faced together. “Without him, I don’t think we would be where we are today.”
Carlos witnessed the events unfold on Monday and was left shaken. “I was trembling when I left the stadium, and it took hours to settle,” he recalled. “We are incredibly hurt and sad, and my heart goes out to his family, who must be devastated.”
The loss resonates beyond the stadium, with Poli Suarez, the Canary Islands' minister for education and sport, declaring a state of “complete mourning” across Tenerife. “Canarian sport has been left devastated,” he told BBC Sport, extending heartfelt condolences to De Miguel’s wife, daughter, and family. “They are the ones suffering most directly from this loss.”
Suarez noted that De Miguel had woven himself into the fabric of the Canary Islands' sporting history, emphasizing the significance of his legacy. “The loss of Jesus de Miguel is now part of our history,” he stated.
A further tribute is set for Saturday at 18:00 GMT, inviting supporters to come together to honor De Miguel’s memory. “It will be a chance to show our affection and solidarity with his family,” Suarez added. “We want to express all our love for Jesus de Miguel.”
