Wrexham Stuns Middlesbrough with Impressive 2-0 Victory
4 November 2026
Wrexham faced off against Middlesbrough in a Sky Bet Championship clash at the Racecourse Ground, and it turned out to be a night to remember for the home fans. With a scoreline of 2-0, Wrexham delivered a significant blow to Boro’s title hopes, marking only their second defeat of the season.
George Thomason opened the scoring in the 71st minute, striking a powerful shot that put Wrexham in front. Just 13 minutes later, substitute Oli Rathbone sealed the deal with a header, securing Wrexham’s fourth win of the season after a string of disappointing results.
Middlesbrough came into this match riding high, unbeaten in their last 11 league fixtures. However, without their top scorer Will Lankshear, who is sidelined with an injury, they looked a shadow of the attacking force that had netted 13 times in their last four games.
Lankshear, with 15 goals this season, matched the entire Wrexham squad's tally before kickoff, highlighting his importance to Boro. His absence was felt, particularly as Middlesbrough struggled to create clear chances in the first half.
The first real attempt came from Kyle Joseph, whose ambitious bicycle kick went just wide. Adilson Malanda then missed a good opportunity, failing to direct a header from a free-kick on target.
Callum Brittain managed to carve out a chance by beating two defenders, but his resulting shot was weak and easily handled by Wrexham keeper Anthony Patterson. After a tough loss to Sheffield United, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson made four changes to his lineup, bringing in Thomason and Max Cleworth among others.
Wrexham took a while to find their rhythm, but they ended the first half looking more threatening. Thomason nearly set up a goal with a low cross that Lewis O'Brien couldn’t quite convert. Cleworth also tested the Boro defense with a long-range effort that had Radek Vitek scrambling.
Wrexham thought they had scored just after the break when O'Brien tapped in a rebound, but he was ruled offside. The home side was brimming with energy, pressuring Middlesbrough into mistakes, prompting a triple substitution from Boro manager Kim Hellberg.
However, a slip-up by Patterson in the 66th minute almost gifted Boro a chance, but Amario Cozier-Duberry skewed his shot wide. Moments later, Wrexham struck first. Cleworth's long ball found Thomason, who made no mistake from the edge of the box, firing home.
Middlesbrough's Jeremy Sarmiento had a chance to equalize but hit the side-netting, a sign it just wasn’t their night. Rathbone, who had come on for Thomason, capped off the evening by nodding in O'Brien's chipped cross to put the game to bed.
This victory is a crucial lift for Wrexham and their manager Phil Parkinson, while Middlesbrough will need to regroup quickly if they want to maintain their grip at the top of the table.
