Carrick Stands Firm with Fernandes as Captain Amid Uncertainty

Michael Carrick is standing by Bruno Fernandes, confirming the midfielder will keep the Manchester United captaincy after a tough loss to Bournemouth. Despite dropping Fernandes for that match, Carrick has no plans to strip him of his leadership role.
The two had discussions this week following Fernandes' outspoken critique of tactics in the defeat to Como, which saw him on the bench against Bournemouth. Harry Maguire wore the armband in that game but it won’t be a permanent switch. Carrick stated, "There is no decision to be made," while praising Fernandes’ contributions.
"He’s an important player for this group," Carrick remarked. "He has been and will continue to be. We need to work together to push things in the right direction. He’s committed to this club and to making improvements. He’s led the team admirably for a long time, and that won’t change."
As for Carrick’s own future, things are still uncertain. With United struggling, having not won in eight games and going over two months without a Premier League victory, club officials recently deliberated on whether to keep Carrick as head coach. Names like Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are being floated as potential successors.
“I don’t need anyone to reassure me,” Carrick said confidently. "I understand the role and the responsibilities that come with it. I’m focused on making things better for the team."
When asked if he was surprised to still be at the helm, Carrick replied, “Not at all. I’m here to do my job and improve the team. That’s my priority."
After the Bournemouth match, the fans showed their support for Carrick, directing their frustrations at the players who faced boos from the crowd. "I care about what the supporters think," Carrick expressed. "Their experience matters to me, and I want to give them something to cheer for. I’m not distracted by anything else; I know what we need to do to get better."
In terms of player availability, United will miss striker Benjamin Sesko until the new year due to a shin injury. However, Carrick was pleased to see Kobbie Mainoo returning to training this week.
