McInnes Stands by Fernandez Amid Criticism

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has rallied behind Emmanuel Fernandez, insisting the center-back has played a significant role in the team's success this season.
The 25-year-old Nigerian has faced scrutiny after some costly errors, particularly during Wednesday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Hearts at Tynecastle. However, McInnes was quick to point out that Fernandez's solid performances often go overlooked.
"I only get asked about Fernandez when he has a poor game. Nobody asked me about him on Saturday, when he was outstanding against St Johnstone," McInnes remarked.
He continued, emphasizing that the recent setback wasn’t solely on Fernandez. "Last night wasn't on Manny; it was a collective issue. He's been important to our better displays this season, and he deserves credit for that."
Looking ahead, Rangers face a challenging test this Saturday as they prepare to take on Aberdeen in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden. McInnes is eager to secure a win against his former club, despite acknowledging that Aberdeen can rise to the occasion.
"People see us as favorites, and I get that, but we still have to prove it on the pitch. Aberdeen are capable of pulling off a big performance," he said.
McInnes added that to lift the first trophy would be crucial for the team's confidence. "Semi-finals can be nerve-wracking; sometimes they don't produce the best football due to the stakes involved. It’s a unique game where form can be irrelevant."
He also expressed understanding for Stephen Robinson, Aberdeen's manager, who is under pressure after his side's recent struggles. "I sympathize with all managers feeling that heat. Managing a club like Aberdeen isn’t always straightforward, but I believe Robinson will find his footing given time."
With plenty of experience from previous semi-finals, McInnes remains optimistic. "I've managed in these situations before and always felt confident we could win, and I’m sure Aberdeen share that belief too."
