England Squad Shake-Up: New Faces, Missing Stars
6 November 2026
In a bold move, Thomas Tuchel has unveiled his 25-man England squad for the upcoming Nations League clashes against Croatia and Spain. Notably absent are Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Kobbie Mainoo, while Jobe Bellingham and Josh King receive their first senior call-ups.
Chelsea's Palmer faced disappointment after missing out on the summer World Cup, partly due to an injury-plagued season. Though he withdrew from previous camps due to fitness concerns, he’s bounced back impressively this season, racking up five goals and three assists in just 11 appearances.
Despite medical checks from England confirming Palmer's fitness, Tuchel acknowledged the player's struggles with commitment to the national team. "It’s hard to argue against what you’re saying," he remarked, adding that Palmer has missed too many chances to impress.
Meanwhile, Manchester United's Mainoo also sat out the last squad due to an unspecified injury and was unable to make an impact at the World Cup. Foden, who has had a hand in six goals over his last six games, finds himself sidelined again, having missed out on the summer tournament and now the autumn selection.
These omissions have opened the door for both King and Jobe Bellingham, who have previously shone at youth level for England. This is a significant step for both players as they look to make their mark on the senior stage.
Injuries are also reshaping the squad. Defenders Trevoh Chalobah and Tino Livramento have pulled out, while Manchester City’s Nico O'Reilly is unavailable as he’s not at full fitness. However, Trent Alexander-Arnold keeps his spot in the lineup.
Djed Spence makes his return from injury for the first time since the World Cup, and Ben White is back in the fold after being absent since March, when he faced jeers from some fans.
Bournemouth's Alex Scott is sidelined with a thigh issue, allowing Everton’s James Garner to take his place. Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White will aim to step up in the absence of Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, both of whom are injured, while Arsenal’s Noni Madueke misses out.
The stage is set for a thrilling international break as England prepares to take on Croatia and Spain.
