Raya: Arsenal's Redemption Fueled by Champions League Heartbreak
5 November 2026
David Raya believes Arsenal is harnessing the agony of last year’s Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain to fuel their ambitions this season.
The Spanish goalkeeper was instrumental in Arsenal's recent victory over Slavia Prague, delivering a crucial save that kept the Gunners in the hunt for the title as they climbed to third in the league with 10 points from four matches.
Looking ahead, Arsenal will take on Borussia Dortmund at home before a significant clash against Real Madrid on December 9. These matches could prove critical for their aspirations to secure a top-two finish, which would mean playing their knockout ties at the Emirates.
Last season, Arsenal made history by winning all eight of their group stage matches, eventually reaching the final in Budapest. However, the shadow of that defeat still lingers for Raya, as PSG claimed their second consecutive title.
“It’s something that will always stay with us,” Raya admitted. “We need to use this experience to push us forward. It must be in our veins; we have to own it and strive to make it right this year.”
Against Slavia, Raya showcased his skills, especially in the second half when Slavia threatened to level the score. His remarkable save from Oskar Kubiak’s header extended Arsenal’s impressive run of ten consecutive away matches in Europe without a loss.
Despite missing out on the prestigious Yashin award for best goalkeeper to teammate Unai Simón, Raya attributes his remarkable performances to unwavering self-belief. “Belief is crucial, but hard work is essential too,” he explained. “I put in a lot of effort during the week to help the team on nights like these. The faith I have in myself, along with the backing from the coaching staff, provides that extra motivation to maintain my performance consistently.”
